The reason for this is that CS 330 is most student's first time seeing proofs and formal methodology since middle/high school Geometry. When I took CS 330 for the first time, I found it very challenging. I started dual-majoring in Math and took MATH 290 (the proofs intro class for math majors) and CS 330 became very easy and enjoyable after that.
